After this post, I'll be all caught up!
Today was probably my favorite liberty day. We slept in, I woke up at 0845 but Colleen managed to sleep an extra 2 hours after me, and spent the day in La Jolla! Our friends Seth and Matt, both from Texas A&M, joined us too. We went kayaking and walked around exploring the shops and eventually ventured over to the rocks and cliffs.
We had lunch at the Cheese Shop where we all got a super delicious sandwich! I got a turkey, jack, and avocado on sourdough. Literally, amazing. We then rented 2 double kayaks and headed down to the beach. The only time I've ever been kayaking was for about 2:30 minutes during sea trails, but this time was so much more fun! Trying to get out fast the breaking waves was hilarious. We were soaked by the time we made it past but surprisingly it wasn't a windy day so we weren't that cold. We paddled out pretty far, admiring the seals and having splashing wars. (Colleen and I didn't win...) I even bought a waterproof camera so we could take pictures out in the water! Those won't be up anytime soon since I'll have to get the film actually developed but I can't wait to see those pictures. They're going to be so funny! :)
When it came time to head back to the beach, Colleen and I decided to ride the waves in. It was a blast because we started catching some good speed, but unfortunately and awkwardly, our kayak became parallel to the waves and... we capsized. The kayak flipped and into the water we fell. The sad part is we were right on the beach! So sand got everywhere. But it was absolutely hilarious and made for a really good laugh. Since we were already soaked, we played in the water for a bit. It was probably the warmest California water I've ever been in!
After we got changed into dry clothes, we got fro yo and looked in a couple surf shops. The cove could be seen from our kayaks when we were out on the water, so we decided to drive around to find that point to go out and explore.
We walked around and played on the rocks, poking crabs and whatnot, and truly had a fun day.
When we got back to Donelley hall around 1730, I folded laundry and made an earnest attempt to catch up on this blog. Laundry here is free which is super convenient, but don't forget to bring your own laundry detergent and dryer sheets! Thankfully I kept those in my car left over from what I used back in the dorms. Now, here I am 2028, finished! I've been snacking since I missed evening chow and probably will shower and stay in tonight. Sometimes, it's nice to just stay in and take it easy.
Not sure what tomorrow holds, hopefully it'll be sunny and we can beach it! But... we'll see :)
